Not Sure if You Should Go Back to Work? Here’s Why You Should!

Three Reasons to Plan Your Career Vision Before the Start of 2022

Unemployment benefits have been ending for many Americans over the last several months. Many people are struggling with deciding whether or not they should go back to work. However, you’ll want to enter the job market sooner rather than later. Here’s why.

Unemployment Benefits Run Out

First and foremost, unemployment benefits are starting to run out fast. Expanded benefits are only good for up to four months. Once the benefits have expired for everyone, you will be one of the millions of people in the United States looking for work.

In many cases, employers are asking employees back to work. If you turn that down, you may be in jeopardy of losing your benefits as well. While you are collecting unemployment, you are required to continue looking for a job. You are also required to take any acceptable employment offer that comes up. Not to mention, the job offers aren’t guaranteed to be there in the future. A job now is better than no job later.

Loss of Other Benefits

You stand to lose other benefits if you choose not to go back to work as well. Of course, employer-paid benefits are completely lost. So, you likely won’t have health insurance, 401K, or any employer-specific perks. If your employer has asked you to return and you decide not to, they can cancel your benefits and terminate you.

COBRA insurance is always an option for people who lose their job. Keep in mind it is costly, though. Receiving paid-for benefits through an employer is preferable.

You Have Run Out of Development Opportunities

You may have taken some time off to focus on your own professional growth. Maybe you’ve been spending your time taking courses or getting additional training. These things will only get you so far though. Eventually, you will run out of classes to take. You need hands-on experience and skills to be a valuable asset to the team.

Work Gives You a Sense of Purpose

Finally, work can give you a sense of purpose. Many people have been cooped up in their homes a lot recently. Depression rates are high, and people are generally bored, especially when it comes to their careers. Lack of fulfillment in this area can lead to a negative outlook on life in general. Most people need to be stimulated in some way. Without some growth, you start to feel stagnant.

Some things to look for in your own actions that indicate it is time to look for work might be perpetual boredom or hyper-focusing on things around the house. You may also find yourself criticizing others too much. These actions point to a deeper problem: you want to return to work and don’t know how to get started.
